WOMEN GO TO COLLEGE

The college scholarship for formerly incarcerated women

Teaching for decades and teaching in prison for some years has reinforced my sense that education and a grasp
of the effects of severe abuse is key to freedom. From that freedom, new lives can begin.

I’m currently building a college scholarship for formerly incarcerated women, which has the working title Women
Go To College
. This scholarship will cover full tuition, from term to term, for study to achieve a BA, and offers access
to personal therapy (such as talk therapy or art therapy) for as long as the student is in college. Also available will be
discussion groups that center on the topics of college, nutrition, and therapy.

My understanding of what is needed has been constantly broadened by my contact with, in particular, the Ladies
of Hope Ministries, the Women’s Prison Association, and the Bard Prison Initiative as well as my long attendance
at the Thomson Reuters’ annual Trust Conference on human trafficking where I’ve met many international activists
working in all branches and types of law, justice, trauma, and prison reform.
